Big News and Decisions

Well, we were waiting until we felt comfortable telling everyone and had a good handle on everything that has been going on. But apparently the rumor mill has been churning, so here it is.

For those of you that are hearing this for the first time...surprise!

The back story:

Two years ago Andy got an email from Google. They had found his resume on the web and were interested in interviewing him. At that point in our lives, we had just gotten married, purchased our house in Reston, and both of us were really enjoying our jobs and where we were at. It was not great timing for us to move across the country. While it was very hard for Andy to turn down his "dream job", he did tell them that if they wanted to keep him in mind, perhaps he would be interested in another year or so.

Fast forward another year.

Apparently Google wasn't kidding when they said they were interested. In November of 2007, they again contacted Andy looking for an interview. He agonized over this for a few weeks, but we finally decided that it would be wrong to tempt fate twice. So he had his first phone interview. After that went well, he was told that instead of another phone interview, he would be flown out to CA for a face interview.

Second weekend of December Andy got to see the "Googleplex". Things went well. At this point Andy is hearing angels singing and a heavenly light is shining down upon him.

After about a month of hand wringing, asking advice, discussing, stressing, re-discussing, offers, and counteroffers, we were finally faced with making a decision.

We are moving to sunny San Fran.

FAQ

-Are you going to sell your house?

Yes.

-Are you going to use a realtor?

Yes. We would be insane to try to sell the house by ourselves in the current market. Besides, moving is stressful enough by itself.

-When is it going to be on the market?

TBA. We are currently looking at different realtors and our options.

-Why don't you just rent your house?

We would lose about $2000 a month by doing this.

-Are you insane?

No...we feel that this will actually be a good move for us. It is probably the best career move Andy could ever make.

-Are you going to be super rich now?

No. Our salaries will not change much. Google is not known for big salaries because the real bonus is working in such a wonderful environment with some of the best in the business.

-Can we come visit you?

Of course. Get in line for a reservation.

-Where will you be living?

We have decided that since we are selling our amazing house and moving to CA, we might as well really live it up and just move directly into the city. So we will be looking for a place in San Francisco.

-Will you buy there?

No. At least not anytime soon. The market out there is really crazy and we want to get to know the areas before we seal a deal.

-Where in SF will you live?

We don't know yet. We plan on going out there in March to scout out places.

-When are you moving?

That depends on a few factors. Selling our house. Allison will finish out the school year. Andy might leave earlier if the house sells.

-Will Allison finish the school year? Can't she just go?

Yes, however this one is a morality and retirement decision. She is eligible for retirement through FCPS after completing this year.

-What will Allison do in SF?

Option 1 - find another job teaching in SF.

Option 2 - work in the cafeteria at Google.

-Won't it be expensive to move all the way across the country?

Yes. Google will pay for it though. :) Pack, move, and unpack.

-What will you do with your cars?

We will definitely sell one if not both cars. We are looking into alternative transportation methods. We may not make that decision final until after we visit or move.

And so concludes the introduction to our most excellent adventure. We will let you know more when we know more. Feel free to post comments and ask further questions on this blog so that we can answer them en masse. To do this, just click on the "Comments" button below. You will then see a place to type and submit.

Wow, congratulations Andy and Allison on your exciting new adventure. I'm so jealous. I love the San Fran area and it will be so much fun living in the city. There's something about the light there that's so unique. We have friends here, moving to VA so I will have them look at your house. Do you have enough realtors that you're looking at? Steve & I liked the one who sold our house in Herndon if you'd like her name. Congrats and much love and luck during to you during the move! Kerry & Steve

Unbelievable. My friends informed me that they were moving via a blog AND included an FAQ. The 21st century Dear John letter. Did google put you up to this?

I have a question. What will Ghiradelli think of your little Hershey A & As? That's something you should really be stressed about. I wish you guys the best. Let us know the dates as they arise, so we can throw a bash at your house the day before an open house....

Cannonball coming?

Congratulations to you both. You know, its traditional for a moving couple to provide gifts for their friends before they depart, such as...oh, I don't know...Google stock options and such. You are bound by the laws of society, do your duty!

And Andy, probably best to keep out of any bars with a disco ball hanging from the ceiling.

My God, the hair...the hair...

Congratulations! This is very exciting news! It will be a lot of fun for you two to move & live in a brand new city. Allison, I like your job option of working in Google's cafeteria :) Best of luck with selling the house and packing.
I will definitely come and visit you in sunny CA - I'll need a break from snowy Chicago! Miss you both!

Almost a century ago, your great grandparents, simply seeking a better life, climbed aboard ships in Europe and set off for a strange land, knowing little, filled with hope, fear, wonder and anticipation. 15 years ago, part of the family travelled to Virginia, and there you two found each other. Today, you two travel westward with the legacy of love and family that will always be yours, wherever your journey takes you. May you both find even more happiness in your new home. God bless you both.

Hey - Congratulations! Andy, did your dad set you up to this so he has another place to travel to in his retirement? I sense his involvement in this . . . Mark
