Day 2 - Noe Valley

Monday we explored Noe Valley and Duboce Triangle.

Noe Valley is a bit west of The Mission. We took the Muni down to 30th & Church Street, and worked our way up Church Street to 24th. According to our sources, this was one of Noe Valley's two main strips. We were disappointed to find only a few restaurants mixed in among the chiropractors, nail salons, and residential units. The other commercial strip in Noe Valley, 24th Street, was our next destination. It was definitely more interesting than Church Street. We saw quite a few cool restaurants along with some interesting shops. However, we noticed again an unsettling number of chiropractors and nail salons, along with an seemingly unending stream of baby strollers. We ended up eating lunch at a sub shop at 24th and Castro - both of the subs we had were very good.

After lunch, we set out on a long walk up the steep western hill bordering Noe Valley. From the top, we stopped for a few minutes to soak in the absolutely breathtaking view of the city beneath us and the bay to the east. We also saw a gorgeous house for sale and noticed the real estate sign listed a website. We checked out the website once we got back to the hotel, and the house (2500 square feet) was listed for $2.2 million. Ouch.

We then walked to the southern part of Noe Valley. From there we followed this path back through Noe Valley (up and down an enormous hill on Castro Street), down into the Castro district, and finally over to the Duboce Triangle Area.

We came away from our visit of Noe Valley feeling that the area was quite yuppified. It was a lot quieter and had some nicer housing than The Mission, but it seemed like there weren't as many fun things going on.  If you wanted to go out, you would probably be going to another neighborhood.

We stopped to catch our breath at Duboce Park for a while. We sat on a bench and watched dogs running around off-leash in the park. After resting, we explored more of the Duboce Triangle area. It seemed very well-maintained and quiet, and it was only a few blocks away from Market Street which had lots of things to do. We'll keep this area on our list.

Finally, we went out to dinner a few blocks away from our hotel downtown at The Daily Grill. Overall, we were not impressed. The side dishes and our dessert (key lime pie) were excellent. However my steak and Allison's pork chop were just okay, and definitely not worth the what we paid for them.
